Knowledge about and Approaches to Fair and Socially Sustainable Cities, focused on the social dimensions of urban sustainability. The project was initiated and backed by five of the Gothenburg platform partners. From their representatives’ point of view, the biggest challenges to social sustainability in the area involved increased segregation, local discrepancies in income and health, and lowering levels of political engagement. There was a sense of urgency to stop the city from falling apart. The project was co-led by an academic researcher and a civil servant engaged in professional facilitation work within the city. It involved in-depth collaboration with some of the local city districts in the City of Gothenburg, the Human Rights Committee and Public Health Committees of the Västra Götaland Region, the Department of Social Sustainability within the County Administration Board, and the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions. The project also collaborated with two local democracy and civil rights movements.
